The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS8 is a basic compact camera which at first glance might seem slightly expensive for what you get. It does, however, make up for this with its generous zoom and great picture quality.

Specs

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS8 has a 14-megapixel CCD image sensor and a 16x 24-384mm wide-angle zoom lens which makes for versatile shooting both indoors and outdoors. Shooting while zoomed in is made easier by powerful optical image stabilisation technology and all images can be viewed on a 230,000-dot 3-inch LCD screen. HD video can also be shot with the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS8, at 1280×720p.

Performance

Panasonic have not altered the look and feel of their compact and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS8 will feel very similar to previous models like the ZS5 and ZS1. It is a simple compact and it seems that Panasonic would like the emphasis to remain on the zoom and ease of use rather than a plethora of fancy features. One new addition to the external design is a useful Easy Zoom Button located just in front of the power switch that will quickly take the camera to full zoom in both still and video mode.

Image quality is good and in bright light outdoors you will have no problems. But when using an ISO higher than 400 noise starts to become very apparent, meaning flash-free low-light shooting is not really an option. HD video captured is around the same quality as that from a compact video recorder, though.

As well as the normal features like AP, SP, manual and auto, Panasonic has also added an array of Scene modes. There is also a High-Speed Burst which will shoot up to 10 frames per second – but only at 3 megapixels.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS8 may be a little on the simple side, with no GPS or 3d imaging, but what it lacks in features it makes up for in quality. The ZS8 gets the job done. It is available in black and silver.
