Some of the shots in the upcoming Avengers movie were shot with an iPhone–and yes, they’re in the movie. In fact, they’re in the trailer.
In an interview with The Irish Film and Television Network (IFTN), Avengers cinematographer Seamus McGarvey revealed that the highly-anticipated Marvel film wasn’t entirely shot on fancy, high-tech equipment.
“[The Avengers] was a whole different exercise in a whole different range of cinematic graphic muscles for me,” McGarvey told Mandy Hegarty of IFTN. “Thematically, it was a turnaround, but also there was a lot more equipment, a much bigger crew, a lot more money to spend on set ups–it was almost like a different medium.”
When Hegarty asked McGarvey if he had any advice for aspiring cinematographers, he responded with the following:
“The beauty of photography or cinema is that you make every choice based on the content at hand. On The Avengers, I did a couple of shots on the iPhone and they are in the movie. In fact, they are in the trailer! I understand that sometimes there is no choice and you have to go for the cheapest option, but if you are limited for choice, you can still make poignant decisions that will effect the look of the film.”
The Avengers, which is set to hit theaters onMay 4, 2012, is based on the Marvel Comics superhero team (basically, the Justice League of Marvel Comics). The movie is highly-anticipated because it will feature several characters from popular Marvel Comics films, including Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), CaptainAmerica (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). The film also stars Samuel L. Jackson and Scarlett Johansson.
Disney and Marvel have been gearing up for The Avengers movie since 2008, when both The Incredible Hulk (starring Edward Norton) and Iron Man were released.
Marvel Comics movies, which include the X-Men franchise, are not known for their modest budgets or lack of special effects–which makes the iPhone shots all the more interesting.
This isn’t the first time a movie’s been shot on an iPhone. Earlier this year, film director Park Chan-Wook shot an entire film using two iPhones. The film, entitled Night Fishing, took 80 people, 10 days, and about $133,000 to make. By contrast, The Avengers took about five months and $220 million to make.
